Listening to the Holy Spirit, the Voice for God within you, is central to the teachings of A Course in Miracles (ACIM). In the Preface of A Course in Miracles, Helen Schucman, the scribe of the Course, makes the following statement about the book:
“It is not intended to become the basis for another cult. Its only purpose is to provide a way in which some people will be able to find their own Internal Teacher.” p. viii
In the Epilogue of the A Course in Miracles Workbook, Jesus states: "This Course is a beginning, not an end...No more specific lessons are assigned, for there is no more need of them. Henceforth, hear but the Voice for God...He will direct your efforts, telling you exactly what to do, how to direct your mind, and when to come to Him in silence, asking for His sure direction and His certain Word." This webpage was built as an outreach to the Course in Miracles community to support the millions of Course students around the world in hearing the Voice for God within them.
Below are the primary A Course in Miracles workbook lessons dedicated to hearing the Holy Spirit. Because the first two A Course in Miracles lessons below contain special significance for us, we have included a little history along with them.
Lesson 125 in the A Course in Miracles Workbook
Candace Doyle: One day in 1994, I was doing Lesson 125 in the A Course in Miracles Workbook entitled, “In Quiet I Receive God’s Word Today.” The lesson reads, “…. He speaks from nearer than your heart to you. His Voice is closer than your hand. His Love is everything you are and that He is; the same as you, and you the same as He. It is your voice to which you listen as He speaks to you. It is your Word He speaks. It is the Word of freedom and of peace, of unity of will and purpose, with no separation nor division in the single Mind of Father and of Son. In quiet listen to your Self today, and let Him tell you God has never left His Son, and you have never left your Self….”
I meditated on this lesson for a long time after reading it, and at some point I heard a Voice in my head say, “Surrender.” Not being one who surrenders easily, I said, “No. I don’t surrender to anything.” A little while later, this Voice again said, “Surrender.” And again, she said, “No. I’m busy meditating.” Luckily for me, this Voice continued until finally I said, “Fine, I surrender!” When I did, everything around her —the house, the ocean, the deck— all of it just disappeared, and the most beautiful, loving Voice filled my mind.
The Voice told me how much I was loved, how precious I was, that I had never done anything wrong. I had heard these types of things before, but hearing them within me made them feel real. After listening to the most loving message I had ever heard, I asked this Voice who it was. Do you know what it said?
It said it was “the Holy Spirit!”
Knowing that I did not like that term, the Voice said, “No problem, you can call me God’s Voice, Inner Teacher, Comforter, Guide, Constant Companion, Translator, Voice for Love or Truth … whatever works for you. Just call me.”
I've been hearing the Holy Spirit within me as a distinct and conversational voice ever since.
Lesson 49 in the A Course in Miracles Workbook
DavidPaul: When Candace began hearing this Voice within her in 1994, she and I were best friends. When we eventually became married in 1998, by began asking the Holy Spirit through her how I too could hear that Voice as a distinct and conversational voice within him.
One Sunday morning in early 2000 while having church together in their home, Candace opened A Course in Miracles to workbook Lesson 49 - God's Voice speaks to me all through the day.
It reads, “It is quite possible to listen to God's Voice all through the day without interrupting your regular activities in any way. The part of your mind in which truth abides is in constant communication with God, whether you are aware of it or not. It is the other part of your mind that functions in the world and obeys the world's laws. It is this part that is constantly distracted, disorganized and highly uncertain.
“The part that is listening to the Voice for God is calm, always at rest and wholly certain. It is really the only part there is. The other part is a wild illusion, frantic and distraught, but without reality of any kind. Try today not to listen to it. Try to identify with the part of your mind where stillness and peace reign forever. Try to hear God's Voice call to you lovingly, reminding you that your Creator has not forgotten His Son….
Do not forget to repeat today's idea very frequently. Do so with your eyes open when necessary, but closed when possible. And be sure to sit quietly and repeat the idea for today whenever you can, closing your eyes on the world, and realizing that you are inviting God's Voice to speak to you.”
After reading the lesson, she closed her eyes and shared the voice of the Holy Spirit out loud, as she usually did on Sunday mornings. As the Holy Spirit finished speaking, it directed me, DavidPaul, to open his mouth and speak God's words out loud as well. Afraid and uncertain, by hesitantly opened my mouth. To my surprise, out came the Voice for God within me. I too have been hearing this Voice within him ever since.

Lesson 221 in the A Course in Miracles Workbook
Peace to my mind. Let all my thoughts be still.
Father, I come to You today to seek the peace that You alone can give. I come in silence. In the quiet of my heart, the deep recesses of my mind, I wait and listen for Your Voice. My Father, speak to me today. I come to hear Your Voice in silence and in certainty and love, sure You will hear my call and answer me.
Now do we wait in quiet. God is here, because we wait together. I am sure that He will speak to you, and you will hear. Accept my confidence, for it is yours. Our minds are joined. We wait with one intent; to hear our Father's answer to our call, to let our thoughts be still and find His peace, to hear Him speak to us of what we are, and to reveal Himself unto His Son.
Lesson 296 in the A Course in Miracles Workbook
The Holy Spirit speaks through me today.
The Holy Spirit needs my voice today, that all the world may listen to Your Voice, and hear Your Word through me. I am resolved to let You speak through me, for I would use no words but Yours, and have no thoughts which are apart from Yours, for only Yours are true. I would be savior to the world I made. For having damned it I would set it free, that I may find escape, and hear the Word Your holy Voice will speak to me today.
We teach today what we would learn, and that alone. And so our learning goal becomes an unconflicted one, and possible of easy reach and quick accomplishment. How gladly does the Holy Spirit come to rescue us from hell, when we allow His teaching to persuade the world, through us, to seek and find the easy path to God.
Lesson 358 in the A Course in Miracles Workbook
No call to God can be unheard nor left unanswered. And of this I can be sure;
His answer is the one I really want.
You Who remember what I really am alone remember what I really want. You speak for God, and so You speak for me. And what You give me comes from God Himself. Your Voice, my Father, then is mine as well, and all I want is what You offer me, in just the form You choose that it be mine. Let me remember all I do not know, and let my voice be still, remembering. But let me not forget Your Love and care, keeping Your promise to Your Son in my awareness always. Let me not forget myself is nothing, but my Self is all.

This holy instant would I give to You.
Be You in charge. For I would follow You,
Certain that Your direction gives me peace.
And if I need a word to help me, He will give it to me. If I need a thought, that will He also give. And if I need but stillness and a tranquil, open mind, these are the gifts I will receive of Him. He is in charge by my request. And He will hear and answer me, because He speaks for God my Father and His holy Son.
